Monday AM and PM Session

People Management, Team Dynamics and Communication
   Speaker:  Bill Shannon, M.Ed

Bill Shannon, M.Ed., is a Visiting Scholar at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in addition to leading his own international consultancy. Much of his current consultative focus includes not-for-profit organizations as well as healthcare systems, hospitals and corporations. Bill is an international speaker and developer of curriculum on Patient & Family Centered Care, Leadership, Values, Team Dynamics, Service Improvement and Management. His work has taken him to Australia, Austria and several countries in Latin America.

Bill was Senior Vice President and Chief Wisdom Officer at DaVita, Inc., a Fortune 500 healthcare services provider where as part of the executive team, he was responsible for the corporate university, all internal communications, company culture and meetings/events.  Prior to his recruitment to DaVita, he served as Executive Director for Service Improvement at Duke University School of Medicine and Healthsystem. At Duke, he began a department and service for creation and organization-wide sharing of best practices which included intranet site, system-wide service synergy group, and internal consultant services. Bill lectured throughout the university, orchestrated the selection and implementation of service standards and behaviors, and led six Duke Hospital departments.

Both Duke and DaVita got to know Bill during his twenty-one years with the Walt Disney Company. At Disney, Bill worked in several divisions including the prestigious Walt Disney Imagineering. Bill was one of four leaders who conceived and opened the Disney Institute where organizations and individuals learn “The Business behind the Magic.”  Bill’s other responsibilities included health, sports & fitness facility and content development, creating experiences and curriculum for Disney’s Corporate Alliance Partners (Exxon Mobil, Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, among others) and noteworthy healthcare organizations. In addition to Duke and DaVita, Bill taught the likes of The Cleveland Clinic, Baylor College of Medicine, Johns Hopkins, American College of Cardiology—in total, over forty healthcare systems from large systems to rural hospitals.

All three of Bill’s presentations will lead with the same premise: The overarching strategy and key tactics needed to become a great organization and better leader.  In other words: “A Great Organization Made Simply.”

Whether People Management, Creating and Leading Teams or improving Communication, everything begins with organizational and personal Values. The Alignment of Values, followed by structures, processes, and behaviors are what can simplify an already busy leader’s life. Bill’s presentations will share his life experiences from being a state championship coach to Walt Disney Imagineer to  senior healthcare executive, and more importantly, efficient, effective and personalized ways of leading people and teams.  A way of thinking followed by takeaway tools and brief checklist of items will be included in each session.

Wednesday AM and PM Session

Decision Making, Information Sharing, Safety Culture and Fatigue Risk Management
   Speaker:  Dr. Terry von Thaden

In the 21st century, safety is a critical strategic issue for organizations and institutions, public and private, large and small. As organizations become more intertwined, dynamic, virtual, and global, approaches to safety must expand to encompass new realities and opportunities. Developing and measuring a robust, informed safety culture allows organizations to engage their human capital in the process of continual improvement related to quality, productivity, and above all safety. While aeromedical organizations may not be able to entirely reduce their exposure to risk, through developing a positive, proactive safety culture they may reduce or avoid altogether negative outcomes associated with adverse events. We will focus on strategies and insights for understanding and grappling with safety issues across organizational boundaries. The focus will be on practical applications and emerging research, to include: decision making, shared information, safety culture, and fatigue risk management.

Dr. von Thaden is a professor at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science and the Human Factors Division, with affiliate appointments in Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering and Psychology. Dr. von Thaden’s research involves the study of information complexity and safety culture in high risk, safety critical sociotechnical systems including aviation, medical, security, and other transportation systems. Her work investigates human factors affecting risk, decision making, information behavior, training, performance, emergency preparedness, crisis response, corporate relations, and regulatory oversight. In 2010 she founded Illumia, a safety consultancy company, and home to the SCISMS, the Safety Culture Indicator assessment tool she developed under multi-year research awards from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Illumia applies her approaches and methods with major industry clients, worldwide.

Thursday AM Session

Current Management Topics & Trends
   Speaker:  Robert Freitas

Anyone involved in a leadership position within a critical care transport program has to read: clinical updates, CME requirements for certification and licensing; aviation updates, the usual “administrivia” from those above and below in the organization.   When was the last time you read a book or an article about leadership or management?  Who really has the time?

Experience makes me believe that if you are not reading business books and literature I am willing to bet your competition is.   This session will allow participants to find the core message in interesting literature and come away with a fast track way to get the main points.

Robert Freitas will be leading a workshop on “Current Management Topics” using articles and books culled from the Harvard Business Review, the New York Times Business Best Seller List and the Business Week Best Seller List. This presentation will be fast-paced, entertaining and interactive.

Mr. Freitas is currently the Executive Director of Emergency Medicine Consulting at Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians,  providing management and education solutions to clients both domestically and internationally. He recently oversaw the acquisition of two emergency departments that see 70,000 patients annually and is a Course Director of the International Emergency Department Leadership Institute (IEDLI), lecturing internationally on healthcare leadership and management topics. Prior to this, he was the Senior Director of Operations at UMass Memorial Medical Center where he oversaw emergency departments, pharmacies, clinical labs, security and safety, as well as other clinical and non-clinical departments. He has managed medical helicopter programs as well as ground ambulance programs and has consulted on emergency management and EMS in numerous countries. Mr. Freitas received a BA in Management from the University of Massachusetts and holds a MS in Healthcare Administration from Lesley University.
